Mersey River - Devonport

Beginning in the city centre this walk follows the Mersey River foreshore where you will pass many interesting sculptures and the viewing platform which is a great vantage point for photographing boats and ships as they enter and leave the river.
Continue on to the Lighthouse at the ‘Bluff’ headland where you can see the blowhole and aboriginal rock carvings.

 
 
 
 

Mersey Bluff Lighthouse

The Mersey Bluff Lighthouse was established in 1889 and is built of bricks on a stone base.
It replaced a succession of beacons and obelisks that had formerly stood on the site. It also replaced the earlier Don River light.
In 1910 the original kerosene lamp was converted to acetylene gas which was supplied by a Colt seven-day acetylene generator.
The light was converted to DC electric operation in 1920 and demanned at the same time.It was connected to mains power in 1978.
The lighthouse stands on top of the bluff to western side of the mouth of the Mersey River in Tasmania north of the Port of Devonport.
The establishment of the lighthouse ended a history of wrecks in this area.

 
 
 
 

Bluff Beach

Devonport has several beaches, all of which are easily accessible and close to the city centre. Bluff beach is patrolled during summer and also has picnic tables, BBQs, public toilets, a huge grassed area and a playground.
From here it is only a short walk to the Bluff Headland and lighthouse.

 
 
 
 

Devonport Apex Regatta Day

The Devonport Apex Regatta Day brings approx. 5000 people to the banks of the Mersey River. We have a huge influx of people in the area over the Regatta weekend.
They have roving races including all categories of boats and ages, wood chopping (world standard) Water skiing with tricks and jumps with spills and heaps of fun, Trans-merset swim,
fashion parades, special celebrity guests and speed boat racing culminating the 'Cock of the Mersey' race to take the days bragginbg rights.
There is fresh food store holders and side show alley to entertain everyone for the day.

Home Hill

Home Hill is the home of former Australian Prime Minister Joseph Lyons, located in Devonport.
The house was built by Joseph Lyons and his family in 1916, where he lived with his wife Dame Enid Lyons and their 12 children. Except for a period of five years it remained their home for the rest of their lives.
The house is open Tuesday to Thursday, and weekends, from 1:30pm to 4:00pm.

Tazmazia

The world of Tasmazia is a crazy complex located in the wonderfully named town of Promised Land in the heart of Tasmania's beautiful Cradle Mountain and Lakes District.

Tasmazia includes 8 mazes, featuring The Great Maze, reputedly the world's largest, as well as The Village of Lower Crackpot, a whimsical model village built to 1/5th scale, The Honey Boutique, The Pancake Parlour, a Gift Shop, a Lavender Farm, and ever present views of majestic Mount Roland.

 
 
 
 

Don River Railway

The railway was established on the Don site in 1973, and trains commenced running in November 1976, the achievement and result of countless thousands of hours of voluntary labour provided by
members of the Van Diemen Railway Society Inc.
Their aim was to recreate the atmosphere of a genuine working passenger railway. Enthusiastic support has been received from the Devonport City Council, who own most of the land on which we operate.
See the display of steam and diesel engines and other rolling stock that has played an important part in Tasmania's rail history.Look through our Museum of historical railway artifacts and photos. Enjoy a half
hour ride on a genuine vintage train along the old Melrose line to Coles beach and back, and also take time to inspect our extensive workshop and site.

 
 
 
 

Lillico Penguin Viewing Area

A new viewing platform at Lillico Beach will help give better protection to the much loved North West Coast penguin colony as well as an enhanced visitor experience.

There are more than 5000 people who use the viewing platform each year to catch a glimpse of the penguins coming in to land.

Bells Parade - Latrobe

Picturesque in Autumn, Bell's Parade is situated on the Latrobe inlet of the Mersey River. It is named after Robert Bell, who with his half brother Henry Bentinck constructed a wharf and a store on the site in 1855.
From the 1880's it was the main port on the river, becoming northern Tasmania's second major trading port for a period.
Bell's Parade is now a favoured picnic area, and The 'Henley-On-The-Mersey' carnival is held at Bell's Parade annually on Australia Day, 26 January and has been a major social and sporting event for in excess of 85 years.

 
 
 
 

Anvers Chocolate Factory

Commenced as a cottage industry November 1989, by Igor Van Gerwen, who came to this country from Belgium.
Anvers Confectionery. In 1991 Igor was approached by a Japanese businessman who ordered a one of order of 3000Kg of truffles. As Igor did not have the facility to produce such a big order, the Japanese Gentleman paid the order in advance so that a proper factory could be build and staff trained. This was the major break Igor had been waiting for and Anvers Confectionery is now a flourishing small business. Products now range from hand made chocolate truffles, chocolate oranges, fudge to moulded pralines.

 
 
 
 

Turners Beach Berry Patch

Open Wednesday to Sunday 10am-5pm. You can pick your own strawberries or we have pre-picked available. Cafe now open serving light lunches, morning/afternoon teas. All home-made by our chef. Gluten free options available.
We can be found on the North of the Bass Highway at Turners Beach in North West Tasmania.
We open in late October or early November until May (season permitting).
During the season we open the farm shop with pre-picked or PYO fruit, jams, ice cream and coffee. We grow strawberries, raspberries, tayberries and blackberries for P.Y.O. and pre-picked sales.

Mount Rowland - Sheffield

Mount Roland stands at 1233 metres above sea level and provides a stunning backdrop to the Kentish Municipality. 7600 hectares surrounding the range has been designated as the Mt Roland Regional Reserve in
December 2000. The walk takes in the plains and plateau leading to the summit of the peak. There are two tracks to the summit.
